4th Annual Kayak-A-Thon kayak For Charity 2009

Thank you everyone for making this event iconic and successful. It means a lot to me, the Charity West Palm organization, Reef Rescue, Shake A Leg, and all the kayakers. We hope to support more and more organizations each year with this event. Come help us grow!

This year the Kayak-A-Thon raised $8,100 net to split between our beneficiaries. We had 65 kayakers paddling in over 40 kayaks and a couple of other vessels. It was a very challenging and beautiful trip.

Laurie Lacera was our top fund raiser this year winning 2 roundtrip tickets anywhere JetBlue flies. A big thanks for all of our kayakers for their fund raising efforts in a tough economy.

BENEFICIARIES OF THE EVENT - 2009

Reef Rescue - The watchdogs of our coral reefs and coastal environment in southeast Florida. Formed by a group of Palm Beach County divers in 2003, their ranks now include divers and non-divers alike. Southeast Florida’s reefs are threatened by a host of stressors from coastal development, agriculture runoff, ocean sewage disposal, siltation and pollution. By focusing on specific, manageable problems and backed by sound science Reef Rescue is making a difference. They have been successful in compelling the regulatory community to enforce the “Clean Water Act” and other environmental statutes designed to protect our fragile and vulnerable coral reef ecosystems. We recommend that you visit their website for more information – www.reef-rescue.org. Our contact person is Ed Tichenor, Reef Rescue Director.

Shake-A-Leg Miami – This is a fantastic organization that works with socially, mentally, and physically handicapped children in a marine environment, utilizing the ocean and waterways to teach environmental lessons, therapeutic sailing and swimming, with specially outfitted vessels to allow the physically handicapped access to the water. In Dade County they cater to over 3000 kids and young adults per year. They want to start replicating their unique and highly successful programs here in Palm Beach County by this summer. We recommend that you visit their website for more information - www.shakealegmiami.org. Our contact person is Harry Horgan – Director.
